Are your loved ones in safe conditions even though are law breaking citizens? Do they deserve to be protected during natural disasters like any other free citizen of America? Inmates have families too and should not be forgotten even as a convicted felon.

A major natural disaster can leave anyone in the dark, but many tend to forget about the lives of inmates and their families during these times. Many Florida families and friends lost sleep stressing over their loved ones that were inmates at the Gulf Correctional Institution in Wewahitchka, Florida. The correctional facility that took a direct hit from Hurricane Michael houses more than 1,500 inmates. Were all of the 1,500 inmates safe during this natural disaster? That is the question many friends and news outlets want answered directly. The facility is 30 miles inland with a powerful category four hurricane ahead and without proper preparation many can be injured and the correctional institution was not evacuated properly. Communication was limited with inmates within the prison. According to the spokesperson both staff and inmates were supplied with enough food. It was more chaotic on the inside than what to institution portrayed to the public. An inmate within the prison told his mother that conditions were really bad after the hurricane and the roof fell down. A numerous amount of damages were the result of hurricane Michael. There were obvious exterior damage to the fence, roof, and staff housing after the hurricane. The Gulf Correctional Institution could have prepared more effectively to protect the safety of inmates, staff, and the facility during Hurricane Michael.
